Anderson SJ, Gardner BW, Moll BJ, Tribble GL, Webster TF, Wilson KR, Zyda MJ. Correlation between air pollution and socio-economic factors in Los Angeles County Atmospheric Environment 1978; 12(6-7): 1531-1535.

Abstract: Correlations are drawn between air pollution levels and a variety of socio-economic factors in Los Angeles County. The study is based on data from eleven monitoring stations for total oxidant, carbon monoxide nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. An air quality surface is derived to represent overall air quality. Socio-economic factors including age, income, housing value, race, and relocation rate are assessed. The total oxidant dosage and the air quality index are found for 37 socio-economic categories. The results weakly suggest that blacks breathe on the average better air than whites or Chicanoes, and that air quality improves with increased education, income, recentness of move, and housing value.

This paper is interesting for its early work on environmental disparities and because it was a product of the remarkable Senses Bureau.
